What stood out to me: average sale price of a BMW 3 series is $46k.

Stupid money for not a lot of car, but I guess M3s also count

They labeled all SAABs and Volvos economy cars, but called the Audi A4 and Acura TL luxury cars ?????

Wrangler is the top FCA vehicle? I’m starting to wonder if people have critical thinking skills....or just got sick of the Wrangler...or just live a life full of “lifestyle accessories”

That’s a very odd trade.
The entire Tesla phenomenon wasn’t really fascinating to me until the 3. The S and X are elite products, and in the case of the S, a very stylish option (even if it was an ICE vehicle, it’s good looking).

If the 3 had a different packaging and gave us the option for a more traditional upscale interior, I’d be very interested. It does a lot of stuff right.

Surprising no one the Prius is by far the most traded vehicle.

The first chart seems to indicate that all the most common trades, besides 3, have selling prices at or below the average new car price but are trading up for a car that’s $15,000-$25,000 more expensive. I find it somewhat hard to believe that people had that much extra coin to put to a vehicle when talking about the normal civic/accord/Camry buyer.

It kinda makes sense, given how many Wranglers are actually sold. I reckon that the people that trade their Jeep for a Tesla bought the Jeep because it looked cool, and then they..... didn’t understand.

So, on to the next thing that looks cool.

So option 3, lifestyle accessory :)

I used to do loan portfolio analysis for cars during the Great Recession. We had to consider the Wrangler a “ sports car” based on how willing people were to just give up on it. It was rarely a main family vehicle, so if people had to choose to stop making payments, that would be it.

Thankfully they’ve always held their value.

It would be interesting to see what cars have the highest repo rate. Probably the same cars that litter BHPH lots.

10 years ago, basically anything by Chrysler or Pontiac had the highest numbers. I can’t speak to the rates, since a single lender doesn’t always have enough volume to create an “accurate denominator.” Plus auto lenders always have to contend with shady dealers pushing bad business your way, which skews any samples.

But you can get the science to the point where you can say “Letting someone with a 600 credit score buy a Pontiac is a 50% chance of loss” — but turning that into policy is complex and potentially illegal (for example, if your main Pontiac dealer is in a 90% Latino neighborhood, you are going to get sued for disparate impact ). Plus you have to codify all these rules for the dealers so they can make a decision, so almost everyone in the business still just uses a simple credit score and Loan-to-Value ratio, plus maybe DTI (debt to income). Makes things quicker and easier.

I think there a lot of people who can afford more than a Camry or Accord, but buy one anyways because its considered economical and reliable. They may  view the 3 the same way (whether we agree or not is another matter).

Im eyeing egolfs in my area right now.  Im not about to drop 30+ on a model 3 but I can do 12 grand on a 15k golf no problem.  Just trying to decide if its worth it.

No, I’m guessing most 3 series are optioned up to that.

Toyota really dropped the ball by not making a nice EV that was the “next step” for Prius owners.

I don’t think an EV on its own would have stopped people from jumping to a Model 3. The Prius sold well because it screamed “look at me, I’m green! What are you doing to save the planet?”. A Toyota EV would just be more of that. A Tesla gets you that image while also giving you brand image. A Tesla is simply a higher horse than a Toyota.

A Lexus EV, then. Just saying, they should’ve worked harder to keep all those Prius buyers “in the family”.

just enough for me. I need about 50 miles a day at worst (average less than 40) . Even with winter range drop I should be okay. I can top off near work if needed. I think the advertised range is 86 miles for the older models.  Besides if its too cold or snowy or I have further to drive I’ll still have the cruiser.

Either gen Volt is in that price and electric range, with the 2nd gen having more electric range and even a 5th “seat” wow amazing.

BMW, Audi, and Prius on the list, that explains the way I see too many of them driven around these parts.

In what sick world is a Camry “economy” but and Audi A4 “luxury”?

“Upgrade from your hybrid to Ana electric car ”

“So.  You want to move on from entry level luxury?”

“You buy appliances; here’s the newest and hottest one.”

And that means the Prius is now just a reliable appliance that has become more affordable on the used car market because it isn’t the “must have” green car anymore.

This pleases me because my next car just might be a Prius because of this.

Yeah, a Camry is a notch above economy and an A4 is “intro lux”.

From an objective point of view it would be hard for someone who buys a camcordcivrolla to justify the unproven factor of Tesla and their spotty record for quality. But what do I know.

Like people who say motorcycles are better than cars because of their excellent mpg. Forget that 2 motorcycle tires can cost the same as 4 car tires or that the service intervals are typically shorter or that insurance is higher or...

Hmm... I would assume you can still run a motorcycle more cheaply than a car, but very good point!
